What is Holistic Nutrition?
Long before conventional medicine and the introduction of drugs to address disease, the approach to improving health was natural. Without drugs, it had to be. But even without drugs, physicians and scientists like Edison, Pauling and Hippocrates knew about the body’s innate ability to heal itself naturally. In fact, Hippocrates, the “Father of Modern Medicine”, is known for the phrase: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Hippocrates lived from 460-370 BC so needless to say, this approach is not new.
By today’s definition, Holistic Nutrition considers the individual as a whole, reviewing all aspects of a person’s lifestyle to help create a state of optimum health. It takes a more macro approach looking at the entire person, rather than a micro view that limits the big picture.
Holistic practitioners generally share the following beliefs:
- Proper nutrition encourages education and incorporation of the following, whenever possible: natural, organic foods, and hormone-free foods, natural holistic supplements and food treatments for chronic health conditions, allowing people to heal naturally without the use of prescription drugs.
- Holistic Nutrition strengthens the bones, blood, muscles and vital organs, including the heart, liver, stomach and intestines, and is designed to heal the body, enrich the mind and cleanse the soul to reach the optimal healthy lifestyle.
- Food provides the energy needed for the body to function properly and can provide powerful benefits for those who suffer from chronic conditions from eczema to asthma to cancer.
